New Orleans Update

I am having a great time in NOLA. Tonight, went to the Hi Ho Lounge for Bluegrass Open Picking Night. I have a lot of photos from the last few weeks, but I have not had time to upload them. I will do that once I am back home and have more free time.

Played pool with some kids from Sierra Leone who relocated to Boston Area five years ago. Talking to them about the civil war was interesting. It is funny to think that five years ago they were living in a country that was ravished by a violent civil war and now, a few years later, I was playing pool with them at a volunteer center in Arabi, Lousiana. Small world with big problems.

I was thinking about this movie tonight:

In NOLA

Things are going well.  Up until today it has been sunny and very warm.  Very refreshing following a winter in Boston.

Went downtown for the first time, today.  I am living at Camp Hope 3 in Aribi, LA which is four miles from the French Quarter.  Riding the bus and just walking around the neighborhood of Saint Bernard’s Parish, it is jarring to see the “X” on the buildings that were hit during Katrina.  The number at the bottom of the x describes how many people were found dead in the house–luckily I have seen nothing but zeroes so far.

Met some hobo drifters, some of whom described themselves as “The Freakshow.”  This couple featured a woman with a beard (approximately two inches long) and suspicious joints, and a guy named “Church” with facial tattoos, slicked back hair rockabilly style and who possessed the ability to stick a six inch, metal nail into his nostril–a nail which he insisted that I pull out.  He also shared with us the insight that he had just scored a free line of heroin.  John, another hobo drifter offered us not only the saliva in his mouth as he drunkenly stammered at us, but also to guide myself and Josh on a journey riding freight trains back to New Jersey.  We graciously declined as the man spilled beer out of one hand with a seven-week old black lab in the other.  Needless to say, things have been interesting.

Pictures soon.
